Ayatollah Mesbah’s solutions to bring the Islamic humanities into daily life

TEHRAN – Sheikh Abbas Ali Shameli, who is one of the students of Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi and obtained his doctorate. in Culture and Values ​​in Education from McGill University in Canada, highlights the activities of his professor outside Iran.

Shameli, who is also a member of the Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute, said: “Ayatollah Mesbah, influenced by Allameh Tabataba’i, believed that Quranic studies should create a new thematic interpretation course of the Quran at the Islamic Seminary of Qom. And our well-educated, well-educated scholars who have put most of their energy into the sequential method are better off now to pay more attention to the topical method. From the start of my studies, Ayatollah Mesbah classified the interpretation of the Quran into 10 different subjects, including education, the Quran, theology, methodology, guidance, anthropology, sociological ethics and psychology which are available in his publications for those who are interested.

The cleric pointed out that thematic interpretations of the Quran and rational science were among Ayatollah Mesbah’s most important innovations and of course great achievements for Iran and the world. He added that Ayatollah Mesbah also put a lot of effort into the rational sciences, including the logic of philosophy, mysticism and theoretical ethics.

Ayatollah Mesbah also believed that if we are to be fruitful for the human being, we must open a new topical interpretation course. He added that Ayatollah Mesbah also started the World Institute for the Compilation of Encyclopedias, which has left a huge influence on rational science. “His efforts in Koranic studies, rational studies and Islamizing sciences will be continued by his students and bear fruit in the next century, as we believe that there is still a long way to go before we succeed in creating an Islamic version of the social and human sciences. Ayatollah Mesbah has opened our eyes to this path and paved the way for us, and we must take the next steps towards it.
Shameli believes Ayatollah Mesbah also established the Toloo-e Andisheh center where scholars who were his students gathered and were sent to other cities and countries for the protection of religiosity. Mesbah used to speak at important political and social events such as Assembly of Experts, Presidency and Parliament, etc., and encouraged his students to participate effectively in such events. He firmly believed that the religion of the Prophet Muhammad should influence and guide human beings in all aspects, social and economic, and that the religious version of life should be different from the irreligious version, and if it is realized, that is the real Islam of Muhammad.

“I think that the Islamizing sciences and the production of religious sciences that were inaugurated by Ayatollah Mesbah will be continued by his students, but it takes a considerable time. The Renaissance lasted for three centuries, from the 16th to the end of the 19th century, in Europe where cultural and scientific reform took place, science and philosophy were eventually separated, and current science courses were formed in the West. Perhaps we need a similar Renaissance and duration for the Islamizing sciences, until Ayatollah scholars are able to educate the new generations who are successful in religious science productions in different social and human domains, ”notes an Iranian scholar.

“Ayatollah Mesbah emphasized the exploitation of Western science and insisted on sending a group of students from Qom Islamic Seminary to other countries to help in the process of Islamization of science,” said himself. Shameli recalls, noting that “Ayatollah Mesbah stressed that we should continue to live in other countries despite the financial difficulties of our country because the Cooperation Office between the seminary and the university discovered that the university instructors were deficient in religious beliefs, values ​​and teachings, while seminary instructors knew only some background information not enough for the process of Islamization. Therefore, he decided to educate a new generation of students postgraduate seminar and promote them to masters and doctorate levels in seminary and university concepts to be able to accelerate the isla process mization of science and production of religious science.

Commenting on equivalent reflections between Ayatollah Mesbah and other eminent Islamic scholars around the world, Shameli asserts: in real life we ​​have to move from sequential to topical interpretation, which means we don’t We have no other way but to open new courses in Koranic studies.

Ayatollah Mesbah’s life story is never limited to theoretical and abstract scholastic arguments. In fact, he always looked for the visible and tangible results of these arguments in the everyday life of people. Emphasizing the importance of this approach, Shameli said that “Sheikh Alameh Mesbah and Muhammad Baqer al-Sadr both believed that if we want the process of Islamization to be properly implemented and to constitute real achievements, we must make scholars Quranic experts and super experts to one of the branches of social or human sciences to be able to raise technical questions. Ayatollah Mesbah believed that students who graduated [in related social and human sciences] in Qom and Iran must be sent to popular universities around the world and receive a doctorate. degree if they are to be used for Islamic mythology. This was one of the most important consequences of Ayatollah Mesbah’s efforts to send us as students to foreign countries to harness Western science for the process of Islamization of science.

“Ayatollah Mesbah has always stressed that in the future we will be more cooperative in the development of the humanities and we will move towards teamwork and interdisciplinary majors. He pointed out that teamwork and interdisciplinary majors are currently two standard indices in the world that accelerate the production of science. Therefore, if we want to Islamize something, we have to use a team of several people so that they can see it from different angles, ”he recalls.

One of Ayatollah Mesbah’s wishes for the future was for his students to move from fundamental and theoretical criticism to comparative studies and field research. He also paid attention to moral education and pointed out that what was presented in the field of moral education was limited to expressing problems and vices. And in the second volume of Ethics in the Koran, in a chapter related to ethics and psychology, he sought to present human psychological theory as the theoretical basis of education and ethics:

“He paid attention to the functions of religion and the use of religion in political and social arenas. He believed that secularism means individualization and privatization, which is not in line with what God and the Prophet said. His second emphasis was on the religious theoretical explanation of Velayat-e-Faqih and the use of religion in human life. The idea of ​​religious democracy versus Western democracy and the right to sovereignty among human beings, both politically and socially, is specific to God. And Almighty God has entrusted this right to the prophets and imams. But this right was inevitably delegated to Velayat-e-Faqih in times of absence because it is the model closest to the model of government. Ayatollah Mesbah, not only in theory but also in practice, was a strong follower of Velayat-e-Faqih and always encouraged his followers to respect it.
