TEHRAN (IQNA) – An international scientific conference will be held in Iran and will focus on the role of religions in building peace across the world.

Entitled “Religions and peacebuilding in the third millennium; Capacities and Challenges”, the conference is organized by the Iranian Scientific Association for Peace Studies and is scheduled to be held in January 2023.

To discuss the matter further, IQNA spoke with Mandana Tisheiar, Chairman of the Board of the Association.

“The Iranian Scientific Association for Peace Studies was established in 2015 and over the past few years has tried to develop peace studies in Iran from different aspects,” she said.

The main objective of this conference, she argued, is to study the role that religions can play in controlling contemporary tensions and problems. The academic cited terrorism, fundamentalism, environmental issues, ethnic tensions, gender tensions and religious tensions between sects as some of those issues facing the world.

The conference will be an opportunity for different religious thinkers, scholars and intellectual elites from different countries to discuss the roles that religions can play in controlling tensions and bringing security and peace to the world, she added.

Asked about the topics of this conference, Tisheiar noted that the organizers have tried to choose different topics in order to cover a wide range of topics. “For example, it is important to see how religious teachings can help produce public peace; what is the idea of religious teachings about tolerance and equality; how can we use religions to stop colonialism and backwardness in different societies; or how we can reduce tensions between ethnic and religious groups in different countries.

Therefore, she continued, researchers and scholars from different social sciences can participate in the event.

Below are the conference posters:

July 21, 2022 has been set as the deadline for submitting abstracts that can be written in English and Persian.

Full papers must be submitted by November 21, 2022. The conference will take place January 18-19, 2023, online and in person.

Asked about the impacts of previous editions of the conference organized by the Association, Tisheiar noted that this is the first time the conference has focused on the subject of religion.

“Previously, my colleagues from the Peace Association tried their best to produce books and articles on peace studies, which is a new subject, in Iran,” she said.

“Last February, we held our fifth international conference on ‘Academia and Peacebuilding in the Cultural Sphere of Nowruz’ and it was the first time that we organized a conference at the regional level. People from 30 countries in the Nowruz region participated in this conference and it was a very successful program to produce two volumes of books in English which both focus on the role that universities, professors and students can play in the production of peace and prosperity at the regional level”.
