TV news anchor Rohit Ranjan, facing multiple FIRs in some states for playing a doctored clip of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, again requested an urgent Supreme Court hearing on Thursday on his plea seeking protection from coercive action for the alleged violation.

A vacation bench headed by Judge Indira Banerjee, who on Wednesday ordered the plea entered to be heard on Thursday, said he was “awaiting an assignment from the CJI.”

“It was not assigned to us. It is pending assignment by the Chief Justice. It may not be awarded to us,” said the bench which also included Judge JK Maheshwari.

Lead Solicitor Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Mr Ranjan, said the petition was due to be scheduled to be heard today but was not on the list of cases and asked that it be assigned to a bench Friday.

“Let’s see. The case documents are with the CJI… List the case tomorrow subject to clearance by the CJI,” the bench said.

The high court agreed on Wednesday to hear the plea on Thursday from the news anchor who is facing several FIRs in some states for airing a doctored clip of Gandhi.

Mr. Ranjan later apologized and the news program was withdrawn.

“This man was arrested yesterday by UP police in Noida and released on bail as the alleged offense was releasable,” Mr Luthra had said, adding that the presenter had made a mistake in one of the broadcasts and apologized for it. return.

“Now Chhattisgarh Police want to arrest him. Please list him urgently because otherwise he will be in custody for several times,” the lead attorney said.

Clash between two state police teams

On Tuesday, a Chhattisgarh police team reached the city of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh to arrest the anchor from his home, but he was instead arrested by Noida police who later released him on bail Tuesday evening.

“Zee News anchor Rohit Ranjan was picked up from his home for questioning on Tuesday morning by a team from Noida Sector 20 Police Station under an FIR filed under IPC 505 (Mischief public) following a complaint from his own channel about a trafficker video released during his show on July 1,” said a Noida police officer PTIseeking anonymity.

In Raipur, Chief Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal said PTI that a case was filed against Mr. Ranjan and others at Zee News on Sunday for allegedly fostering enmity between different groups and outraging people’s religious feelings based on a complaint by Congressman Devendra Yadav.

In his complaint, Mr Yadav said a video, in which Mr Gandhi described those attacking his Wayanad office as children and claimed he had no ill will against them, had been ‘maliciously’ used by the TV channel on July 1 to suggest he forgave the killers of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal.

The Raipur FIR was filed under IPC sections including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class), 467 (false), 469 (false to damage reputation), 504 (intentional insult).

On July 2, a day after the video was released, Mr Ranjan apologized for mistakenly playing Mr Gandhi’s statement out of context by linking it to the Udaipur murder case.

“It was a human error for which our team apologizes. We apologize,” he tweeted in Hindi.
