Gary Lee Devine, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died on July 1, 2022 at the age of 74. Gary was born on October 31, 1947, to Sam and Mary Devine at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. When he was in fifth grade, his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he graduated from North Kansas City High School. He then studied religion at Baptist Bible College where he received a bachelor’s degree in theology. While attending Baptist Bible College, he met Sandra K. Knisley, whom he married on May 25, 1968. Gary spent many years in church work serving the Lord as a minister and music director. His early service was spent at Southwest Baptist Church, Faith Baptist Church, and Heritage Baptist Church as Associate Pastor and Minister of Music in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1981, Gary and his family moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he concluded his career in Baptist ministry as Associate Pastor of Bryan Road Baptist Church. While finishing his ministry career, he attended Oklahoma Baptist University where he earned a second bachelor’s degree in music education. After graduating, Gary served as music director at Wesley United Methodist Church and began his teaching career at Grove Elementary School. Gary continued his studies as a teaching assistant at the University of Oklahoma. He earned his Masters in Music Education and completed his All But Dissertation (ABD) doctoral work. After earning his master’s degree, Gary moved to Houston, Texas for ten years. While in Houston, Gary received a scholarship to study Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico before moving to Beijing, China to pursue his career. Gary’s dream and desire to move to Beijing aligned with his life’s goal of traveling the world and learning about different cultures. He was in China for five years where he taught where he taught at the International School in Beijing, before his retirement. He was a very gifted hard worker and had a great love for teaching elementary music. Gary was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Dean Devine and Jerry Devine. Gary is survived by his sister, Linda Hamm of Kansas City, Missouri; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Diane Devine of Kansas City, Missouri; his daughter and son-in-law, Cheri Devine-Richards and Jeff Richards of Stanford, Washington; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a nephew and other extended family members, friends and family from the church. Gary will be cremated and his ashes scattered while traveling to a beautiful destination, to be determined, as he would have liked.
