Islamic Studies Association elects its President – ​​Matters India

New Delhi, October 8, 2022: Father of God’s Word Pushpa Anbu has been elected President of the Islamic Studies Association (ISA), a group of Christian scholars on Islam and Christian-Muslim relations.

The election took place on October 8 during the general assembly of the association at St Xavier’s School in Delhi.

The ISA was established in 1979 to promote study, research and teaching concerning the history, religion, culture, socio-economic conditions and other aspects of Islam and to work for the promoting relations between Muslims, Christians, Hindus and other religious and social communities in India.

Over the years, the association has remained committed to promoting the national integration of all Indian cultural, social and religious groups and to supporting government programs to that end.

Father Anbu, who holds a doctorate in Islamic studies from Jamia Millia Islamia, is also the general secretary for formation and education in the congregation of the Society of the Divine Word.

He thanked the General Assembly for electing him to his new role and highlighted the relevance of ISA’s mission in our time as ambassadors of Christ promoting peace and reconciliation in the current context of hatred. and fear. Ignorance is fertile ground where hatred and fear spread like wildfire, he added.

The ISA will organize programs to bring people from different religious traditions to learn to value each other’s faith, Fr. Anbhu said.

The ISA also elected Jesuit Joseph Victor Edwin, Lecturer, Theology and Christian-Muslim Relations, Vidyajyoti Institute of Religious Studies, Delhi, as Secretary, and veteran Jesuit missionary, Fr. Varkey Perekatt, as Treasurer.
