Liam Neeson was part of a larger ensemble for Richard Curtis’ Christmas-themed rom-com, but his role as a grieving widow who makes it her mission to help her stepson woo a classmate is l one of the most tender and generous elements of the film. Neeson has primarily made a career out of his severe roughness, so seeing his heat ability was a highlight here.

Liam Neeson received plenty of accolades and a few acting awards for his starring role in Neil Jordan’s Michael Collins. Playing the role of a leader in the struggle for Irish independence in the early 20th century, Neeson was magnetic and passionate, capping off a thunderous trilogy of historical and biographical drama after Schindler’s List and Rob Roy. Julia Roberts, Aidan Quinn, Stephen Rea, Alan Rickman and Brendan Gleeson co-starred in this hard-hitting ’90s flick.

Liam Neeson worked with the legendary Martin Scorsese for a second time, after Gangs of New York, in 2016’s Silence, about two 17th-century Jesuit priests who travel to Edo-era Japan to find their missing mentor. Neeson’s supporting role was the enigma at the heart of the story, playing the Jesuit Cristóvão Ferreira, a man who had recanted his faith under threat of torture. Silence is one of Scorsese’s most thoughtful and contemplative works, like Kundun in 1997, and was a passion project that spanned 25 years.

Neeson returned to biographical drama and critical acclaim, with Kinsey in 2004, starring famed “sex therapist” Alfred Kinsey. Beauty and the Beast’s Bill Condon directed Neeson in one of his most lauded roles, rebelling against the anti-sex propaganda of his time, ultimately gathering scientific data on human sexual behavior. Neeson captures Kinsey’s intelligent and obsessive nature in a terrific film starring Laura Linney, John Lithgow and Peter Sarsgaard.

Liam Neeson portrayed a macabre supe in Sam Raimi’s Darkman, the story of a scientist left deformed and on death’s doorstep, who rebounds for revenge using fake faces that allow him to become anyone he wants. Neeson’s dizzying and violent vigilante was hailed as a gruesome good time as Raimi moved from his Evil Dead roots to something that blended horror and high-stakes adventure.

Although somewhat overshadowed by Braveheart, released the same year and centered on a different historical Scottish rebel, Michael Caton-Jones’ Rob Roy was still a modest success and one of Liam Neeson’s best leading roles. With incredible performances from co-stars Jessica Lange and Oscar-nominated Tim Roth, Rob Roy was a thrilling character-driven study of a Scottish chieftain who fights sadistic nobles in the 18th century. Neeson was phenomenal in this title role, fueled with fury and fervor.

A career high for Liam Neeson that few saw coming, Taken is one of the best and tightest action films in history, impeccably plotted, directed, and in full command of Neeson’s talents as a strong leader and motivated. Neeson had acted in action movies before, but Taken fundamentally reinvented and reinvigorated his later career and turned him into an action hero in his own right. Lesser sequels followed, but Taken, with his memorable phone call scene, led Neeson into a new realm of intense thrillers and edge-of-your-seat adventures.
