Nine penguins shortlisted for #HLTF indoor academic honors


Nine members of the Youngstown State track and field team have been honored for their dedication and hard work in the classroom and named to the #HLTF Indoor Academic Teams and 2022 Academic Honorable Mention Teams, the league announced. Monday.

Four members of the men’s team were selected for All-Academic status, including Derek Basinger, Zach Gray, Brock Grundy and Dominic Perry.

Morgan Cole, Natalie Fleming and Nicole Squatrito represented the All-Academic Team women’s program this season, while Emily Bee and Nia Williams-Matthews received honorable mention.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal varsity teams from all leagues in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for the Horizon League All-Academic exam, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the institution member, after earning 24 semesters or 36 quarter-hour credits, and compete in 50% of the team’s overall competitions. New this season is the addition of honorable mention teams for student-athletes who received at least 25% of the votes, but were not selected to All-Academic teams.

Derek Basinger, Youngstown State, Senior, GPA: 3.69, Major: Integrated Sciences Education
– Finished third in the men’s mile race at the #HLTF Indoor Championships, with a personal best 4:11.86 – the league’s third-fastest time recorded during the 2021-22 indoor season .
– Holds 18and best time over 3000m (8:33.39), 23rd best time over 800m (1:58.39) and 28and best 5000m time (15:09.40) in the conference during the season.

Zach Gray, Youngstown State, Junior, GPA: 3.71, Major: Criminal Justice
– Finished sixth in the men’s shot put competition at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a throw of 15.88m (52′ 1¼”)
– Finished sixth in the men’s shot put at the #HLTF Championships with a throw of 15.37m (50′ 5¼”).
– Has the league’s sixth-best shot put rating, eighth-best shot put rating

Brock Grundy, Youngstown State, Junior, GPA: 3.88, Major: Nursing
– Finished fourth in the men’s shot put at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a throw of 16.81m (55’2″).
– Finished fifth in the men’s shot put competition at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a mark of 16.44m (53′ 11¼”).
– Has the league’s fifth-best shot put, sixth-best shot put

Dominic Perry, Youngstown State, Junior, GPA: 3.80, Major: Business
– Member of the 2021 Horizon League Men’s All-Academic Indoor Track and Field Team.
– Won the league title in the men’s shot put at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a throw of 18.33m (60′ 1½”).
– Finished second in the men’s shot put at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a throw of 17.52m (57′ 5¾”).

Morgan Cole, Youngstown State, Junior, GPA: 3.94, Major: Nursing
Won individual league championships in the women’s 3000m and 5000m races at the #HLTF Indoor Championships
Has league-leading marks in the women’s 3,000m (9:42.06) and 5,000m (17:01.13), while holding the conference’s fourth-fastest mark in the mile (4:58.28 ).

Natalie Fleming, Youngstown State, Senior, GPA: 3.89, Major: Business Administration
– Member of the 2021 Horizon League Women’s All-Academic Indoor Track and Field Team.
– Finished second in the women’s mile race at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a time of 5:02.70.

Nicole Squatrito, Youngstown State, Senior, GPA: 3.60, Major: Nursing
– Named #HLTF Indoor Championship Top Performer, Running.
– Won individual league titles in the women’s 800m and mile events at the #HLTF Indoor Championships.
– Has the league’s best time in the women’s 800m (2:11.11) and second best time in the mile (4:55.89) during the 2021-22 indoor season.

Emily Bee, Youngstown State, Sophomore, GPA: 3.82, Major: Criminal Justice
– Recorded a personal best and second-best league mark of 3583 points for a second-place finish in the Women’s Pentathlon competition at the #HLTF Championships.
– Has the sixth-farthest high jump mark in the conference, eighth-farthest long jump mark, 10and best time over 60m hurdles and 25and best shot put.

Nia Williams-Matthews, Sophomore, GPA: 3.76, Major: Exercise Science
– Set a YSU program record in the triple jump en route to the individual league title in the women’s triple jump at the #HLTF Indoor Championship, jumping 12.29m (40′ 3¾”) on his sixth and final attempt.
– Finished third in the women’s long jump competition at the #HLTF Indoor Championships with a jump of 5.67m (18′ 7¼”).
