On December 3 and 4, Xi Jinping personally chaired the first National Conference on Work Related to Religious Affairs that the CCP has held since 2016. Xi spoke at the conference and called for further study of Karl’s texts. Marx on religion by all. those involved in the management of religious activities in China. He also reiterated that the “sinicization” of religion means its alignment with the principles, goals and guidelines of the CCP, and lamented that the process he launched with the 2016 conference is not moving fast enough.

Since Xi indicated that Christians, in particular, tend to engage in proselytizing activities, which are prohibited, and to post unauthorized religious content on social media, the Church of the Three Autonomies controlled by the government, the body the government uses to control Chinese Protestants, was the first to call for the National Conference’s guidelines “immediately” to be implemented.

On December 7, Pastor Xu Xiaohong, chairman of the China Three-Self-Government Christian Patriotic Movement Committee, held an extraordinary meeting of the China Christian Committee and Council, which oversees education in the Three-Self Church Churches, whose purpose was to listen to a videotaped version of Xi’s speech at the National Conference and develop a plan to implement it. All the major national leaders of the Church of the Three Autonomies were in attendance, including Pastor Wu Wei, chairman of the Christian Council of China, Pastor Shan Weixiang, vice chairman and general manager, vice chairman Shen Xuebin and general secretary Gu Mengfei.

Xu Xiaohong said churches should leave less important issues aside and focus on two issues, COVID-19 prevention and the 100e anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. Xu said Xi Jinping’s speech can be summed up as “Nine Must,” which should become the agenda of every pastor and every community over the coming weeks and months. First, we must deeply understand that religious work is part of the larger work of the Communist Party. Second, we must obey the Party leaders and officially approved religious leaders.

Third, we must study and implement the Marxist theory of religion. Fourth, we must study and implement the CCP’s guidelines on religious work. Fifth, we must continue on the path of sinicizing religion. Sixth, we must understand that the main goal of every Christian community is to rally Christian believers around the CCP and the government. Seventh, we must cooperate with believers of other authorized religions for these purposes. Eight, we need to build more stable and well-controlled organizations. Nine, we “must raise the level of the rule of law in religious work”, which means that we must punish those who deviate from existing regulations,

The meeting also asked Christian churches to preach in their sermons the Four Consciences (四个 意识), the Four Trust Matters (四个 自信), and the Two Sustains (两个 维护). These are slogans that all Chinese know and are asked to repeat daily, but what is interesting is the insistence that they should be part of sermons in Christian churches. The Four Consciousnesses are the awareness of the duties to maintain political integrity (政治 意识), to appreciate the bigger picture (大局 意识), to follow the main leaders (核心 意识) and to stay aligned with the main leaders (看齐 意识).

The four questions of trust mean trust in the way (道路 自信), theory (理论 自信), system (制度 自信), and culture (文化 自信) of the CCP. Both support mean maintaining the centralized and unified authority and leadership of the CPC Central Committee (坚决 维护 党中央 权威 和 集中 统一 领导) and the central position of Secretary-General Xi Jinping in both the Central Committee and the Party. in general. (坚决 维护 习近平 总书记 党中央 的 核心 、 全党 的 核心 地位).

As it concerns Bitter winter knows, an important question that has not been addressed is how to prevent the Church of the Three Autonomies from keeping losing members unhappy with the fact that sermons increasingly focus on CCP propaganda rather than on the christianity.
